Message to parents
Welcome to my web page! I look forward to a great year! I am a veteran high school teacher and also a parent of five children, and all have either graduated or are currently in high school. This web page makes it much easier for you to monitor what is going on.
Many (but not all) of my lectures, usually in accordance with a text, are being added to this Weebly website, allowing more classroom time to check for understanding and analyze the content. Most reading is done in class.
Public schools are doing a reasonably good job educating our children. The majority of teachers in my department have graduated from elite universities and hold an advanced degree in addition to a teaching credential. See an excerpt from The Teacher Wars here.
There are things you can do to help your child along. See my blogs on the subject here and here. However, current research by Robinson and Harris shows that parental involvement in your child's high school education, especially helping with homework, is of limited value.(See here.)
Self Improvement for Students
Farrington writes that students succeed by adopting four core beliefs: 1. I belong in this classroom community, 2. My ability and competence grow with my effort, 3. I can succeed at this, and 4. This work has value for me.
It is important for high school students to get to bed earlier.
Studying music helps.
Can virtuous habits be cultivated (here)?
Kids cannot multitask.
See how students should conduct Internet research here.
Read about the importance of college here. The New York Times (2015) writes: "These days, most middle-class adults reached their status through higher education. As recently as 1992, half of all middle-class households were headed by someone with a high school education or less, according to the Times analysis. Today, only 37 percent of the middle class has not been to college."
See the statistical analysis showing the payoff from a college education below.

How do elite universities select students? See here. Community colleges have not been successful in producing eventual bachelor degrees. See here.
